Perhaps the greatest level of advancement has occurred with contact lenses. Here are just some of the highlights, please call us to learn more!
Silicone Hydrogels
This is the name of the newest class of contacts. These contacts allow a very high level of oxygen to pass through the lens from the air to our eyes. This is important because our cornea (the part the contact sits on) is the only part of our body that does not receive oxygen from the heart (if there were blood vessels in our cornea we wouldn’t be able to see!!). Because of this, our cornea is the only tissue in the body that actually breathes; it has to absorb its source of energy (oxygen) directly from the atmosphere. For people wearing contacts, the problem was the contact lens greatly diminished the eye’s ability to absorb oxygen. This led to a weakened cornea which led to increased discomfort, blur and infection. For the most part this issue has been erased with silicone hydrogel lenses. They are so healthy that several brands are even approved for sleeping in overnight! This is a great option for people with very high prescriptions who are tired of not being able to see when they wake up, or parents that are up during the night with little children (especially moms). They are also more forgiving on those who have a hard time remembering to take their lenses out. Silicone Hydrogels are available whether you have astigmatism or not! They are not available in colors, yet.
Got Astigmatism?
For years people who have astigmatism, whether just a little or a lot, have been told that they are not candidates for contacts. This is WRONG!!!! The options available to us for astigmatism are growing very quickly, and the quality of these lenses is excellent! Dr. Olsen has fit people in soft contact lenses who have five or more diopters of astigmatism and they see just as good if not better than with their glasses! (most people have 1.5 diopters or less of astigmatism). If you have been told you can not wear contacts because of your prescription, come in and let us show you what you have been missing!
